I made these bars in photoshop and put "free to use" in the comments.
Just right click on them to download. View source on one of the quiz pages
to see how these can be put in as backgrounds. There are many other backgrounds
available in the references given on the Web Resource
Page. I expect everyone to go through those references and look at
the chapter on webpage design in the WWW/ Netscape book.
What we're going to do and where to go for help:

Set up at least two pages, linked together. When you FTP your pages to
the web, you'll want to name the first (home) page index.html so that it
loads automatically when your Granny clicks on your URL. (Else she'll be
looking at a directory and getting into your stuff).

AFew Potholes to Watch Out for...
I hope this exercise will be a lot of fun and open new worlds of communication
for us all, but be careful about consistency in spelling--these are the
most confusing bugs (worse than Visual Basic)
Specifications and required features include:

At least two pages with links to each other--the pages must have some information
that is uniquely related to you, so I can tell who did it.

Turning in an unaltered copy of pages you downloaded won't get any credit.
-
Turning in a copy of someone else's work will result in no credit for both
parties.

use a few different text styles
-
at least one picture on each page that you have added
-
a list--either ordered or unordered with at least three items
-
put a link to email you with comments on the bottom of the pages.

E-mail me a link to your URL for grading. This requires that you successfully
put it on the web
Putting your pages on the web:

FTP the pages to your UNIX account. you will have to create a directory
named \public_html\ so it is accessible to the world. See the instructions
on this that are referenced from the UMSL home page on Creating your own
personal homepage. I'll demonstrate this in class.
in UNIX, on the server, you can have more than three characters as
the file extension. Name your homepage index. html so it will be opened
automatically when someone accesses your directory. After FTP transmission,
you may have to rename some files to get references consistent.
UNIX is case sensitive. be careful that all your references match in
spelling and case. for example, if you have a link to a page named pagetwo.htm
in your index page, make sure the file name on the server isn't page2.htm
or Pagetwo.htm.

Send your URL to me and your friends by Emailing a clickable link.
Just put the following in the body of your Email:
My URL is:
http://www.umsl.edu/~rbanis
Obviously put your ID rather than mine in the URL!!! Otherwise your
Granny will end up at my page rather than yours.
A few people asked if it was okay to use some pictures from my pages
and to put links to my pages.
I think everything I have put up on these pages is either free to use
or belongs to me. It's fine with me for you to use them as long as there
isn't excessive (!) ridicule or defamation or illegal use or other uses
that don't fit the context and purposes of the University (a vice-chancellor
suggested this phrase).
I will try to allow some time in our last class for people to show
off their web pages on the big screen.
